Accessibility at University Through Experiences of Deaf People

Abstract
This study is primarily an attempt to get a global perspective of accessibility at university throughout the world and to explore experiences of deaf students and staff based on a pilot online survey. The survey is carried out with regard to the rights of deaf people to education indicated by the United Nations (UN), and is intended for deaf students (BA, MA, PhD or higher qualifications), deaf graduate employees at universities and deaf people recently graduated (max. 5 years ago). Collection of data and responses is still in progress. This presentation provides an overview of the study and its progress so far.
The online survey is created based on the experiences of deaf people and university staff reported in various documents such as articles, reports, research papers, and university accessibility surveys done in different countries. The documents were analyzed to objectively identify main areas related to accessibility, which were then used to create the survey categories.
Although the main aim of this pilot online survey is collecting data to see various situations of deaf academics, it can provide directions for future work. Firstly, there is a possibility to examine a selected issue more deeply and to compare the situation of selected countries. Secondly, there is the possibility to create a social network for all these deaf people to collaborate, such as setting up a new research project, as well as the opportunity to create informational point for international exchange.
